Green Line Extension Project (GLX)

The Green Line Extension (GLX) project extends MBTA Green Line service north of Lechmere Station and into the communities of Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford.

The project involves construction of 6 new Green Line stations along 2 branches: the Medford Branch which opened for passenger service on December 12, 2022, and Union Square Branch which began passenger service on March 21, 2022. In addition to the new stations, Lechmere Station was relocated and reconstructed.

Complimenting the transit components of the project, The GLX Community Path is in its final phase of construction. The approximate schedule for completion is mid-June, 2023, and the contractor, GLX-Constructors, is finalizing work items and preparing the path for opening. The MBTA and City of Somerville are entering into an agreement for the City to become the operator of the path. This section of multi-use path will complete the connection from Bedford, MA into City of Cambridge, Boston Proper, and beyond.

GLX will significantly reduce vehicle trips and related air emissions while increasing access to fast and reliable public transit service in historically underserved areas. The project is expected to support increased ridership of more than 50,000 passenger trips per day in the coming years.
