What you need   for Apply for a real estate attorney-broker license

Any licensed Massachusetts attorney in good standing is eligible to apply for an aAttorney-bBroker license. Applicants do not have to take the real estate broker license exam, in accordance with G.L. c. 112, §§ 87PP - 87DDD. To complete an application, you will need the following:

  • A certified letter of Good Standing issued by from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC).
  • A Surety Bond of $5,000 in your name. You must have this Bond before you submit the application.
  • A completed and signed Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) Form. This form must also be notarized. A recent, color photograph of you that complies with these guidelines.

You might also need these documents:

  • An official letter or certificate of standing for each professional license you hold. The letter or certificate must be dated 90 days before the date you submit your application.
  • A document that explains all past and present disciplinary actions against you related to your professional licenses, and copies of any official records of the disciplinary action. 
  • A document explaining all prior felony or misdemeanor convictions against you. You will also need copies of certified court records related to the conviction.

The application fee and the license fee are both charged when you submit your application. The fee is adjusted based on your date of birth. At the end of your application, you’ll be asked to provide payment information. You can pay by providing bank account information or using a credit/debit card. There is also a convenience fee for certain online payment transactions.

  • Log in to the ePLACE portal or create an account here
  • Once you have logged in, select "Account Management" from the menu at the top of the screen
  • Select "Manage Licenses, Permits and Certificates." Below that, you should be able to select "File an Online Application"
  • Agree to the terms and select "Continue"
  • Select "Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons"
  • Select "Real Estate Attorney Broker Application"
  • Fill out the application. If you want to save your progress, you can select "Save" and resume later

  1. Application review and processing time

    It takes a minimum of 10 business days to review and approve a real estate attorney-broker application. Only completed applications are reviewed. If you do not submit all required documents, your application will not be accepted.

  2. Application Approval

    After your application is approved, you will be issued a license. The license number should appear on your ePlace account immediately.  Your license information will then be added to DOL's public  database within 24-48 hours. A license card will be mailed to the address provided on your application.
