State Library Transcription Project: Pilot

The State Library’s Special Collections Department is leading a pilot project in conjunction with volunteers through the Executive Office of Elder Affairs with the goal of transcribing the Colonel Alfred Stedman Hartwell Collection

About the Hartwell Collection (Ms. Coll. 1)

The Colonel Alfred Stedman Hartwell Collection consists of correspondence detailing the investigation of abuse allegations in the recruitment of Black soldiers during the Civil War, affidavits and statements that Hartwell gathered from soldiers, and other evidence, such as muster rolls of Black soldiers credited to Vermont and New York, relevant to the investigation

About this Project

  • FromThePage is a crowdsourcing platform for archives and libraries where volunteers transcribe, index, and describe historic documents
  • FromThePage provides volunteers the opportunity to read meaningful primary source documents; as a result, the transcribed documents become available to patrons who might not otherwise be able to use them due to access barriers
  • Completed transcripts will be uploaded to the State Library’s digital collections, making our archival documents more accessible to the public
