Fiscal Year 2024 budget was signed this summer as Chapter 28 of the Acts of 2023
-
Section 83 of the budget requires the GIC to offer health insurance coverage to any new and eligible employee on the first of the month following that employee's date of hire.
-
(If asked about the scenario in which an employee begins work on the first of the month, you may note that their benefits would begin that day)
-
The goal of this mandate is to reduce the waiting period for benefits that sometimes leaves a new employee with a gap in their insurance coverage.
-
This law goes into effect on July 1, 2024 and the GIC is required to make technical, systems, and operations changes by this date.
-
The GIC will apply this change to ALL applicable coverage it offers.
-
This change will impact all eligible new hires as well as agencies and entities that offer benefits through the GIC and will require significant coordination.
-
This project has only just launched and further details are forthcoming about what coordination will be needed.
-
Please be on the lookout for further communications on this matter.
