Veteran Hire Tax Credit

The Veteran Hire Tax Credit provides an annual credit per employee for small businesses who hire a "Qualified Veteran".

The Veteran Hire Tax Credit provides an annual $2,000 tax credit per employee for small businesses (less than 100 employees) who hire a "Qualified Veteran" St. 2017, c. 47. For this tax credit, the veteran must be a resident of Massachusetts and meet any of the following criteria:

  • Be a member of a family receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for at least a 3 months for over one year before the hiring date

  • Be unemployed for at least 4 weeks (whether or not consecutive) one year before the hiring date

  • Have a service connected disability and be hired within one year of discharge from the military

  • Have a service-connected disability and have been unemployed for 6 months (whether or not consecutive) one year before the hiring day

Veterans must be certified as a "Qualified Veteran" by the Executive Office of Veterans Services in order for a small business to access this tax credit. Small businesses applying for this tax credit must also be certified by EOVS. The tax credit is available to the small business for two years (including the year the veteran is hired in).
