These laws & regulations govern our work in the regulation of the Massachusetts public retirement system
PERAC is an independent agency under the Executive Office of Administration and Finance. Our enabling statute is Chapter 7 section 49 of the Massachusetts General Laws. The Legal Unit is often called upon to issue opinions on retirement matters, preparing hundreds of opinion letters each year. The Unit also handles Freedom of Information Act requests and responds to inquiries to the Commission on retirement benefits. All Massachusetts contributory retirement systems are subject to the provisions of G.L. c. 32.
