National Prisoner Survey

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) requests this report yearly and participation is voluntary.

Item 2: The jurisdiction counts exclude inmates in the county system (local jails and houses of correction) serving a sentence of over one year. By Law, offenders in Massachusetts may be sentenced to terms of up to 2 1/2 years in locally-operated jails and correctional institutions. Such population is excluded from the state count but is included in published population counts and rates for local jails and correctional institutions.
