Boston, MA — Inspector General Jeffrey S. Shapiro was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Association of Inspectors General (AIG), a nonprofit organization for agencies and professionals in the inspector general (IG) community. His election was announced last week at the AIG’s annual training conference in New Orleans, LA.

“Inspectors general and their agencies at the federal, state and local level do the necessary work holding government to account and making government work for the people. The AIG plays a critical role in supporting them and establishing and maintaining the highest standards and certifications for those working in this profession,” IG Shapiro said.  “I am humbled to join the leadership of this organization and to work alongside my national colleagues to ensure that inspectors general and professionals within this community are trained, certified and supported. And that IG offices have the hallmark traits to be effective oversight agencies.”

“In just two years, Jeff Shapiro has established himself as an engaged and proactive Inspector General and as a valuable contributor to the AIG,” Will Fletcher, Inspector General of the Gateway Development Commission and AIG President, said.  “I welcome his energy and deep commitment to the mission of fighting government fraud, waste, and abuse to the AIG Board.”

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to work with IG Shapiro on the AIG board,” City of Chicago Inspector General Deborah Witzburg said. “Participating in the national oversight community sharpens our skills, deepens our capacities, and amplifies the impact of our offices. Jeff and his staff will be great assets to that community.”

"Commonwealth of Massachusetts Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro is an effective and results-driven leader dedicated to making government work for those who need it most," said New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang. "On behalf of the State of New York, I'm thrilled to congratulate Shapiro on his appointment to the Board of the Association of Inspectors General (AIG). Since September 2022, Shapiro has made it a priority to build bridges and ensure that every voice in the Commonwealth is heard. I know he will be an invaluable addition to the AIG Board and will work diligently to further our collective goal of advancing integrity, transparency, and accountability in government."

The Association fosters and promotes public accountability and integrity in the general areas of the prevention, examination, investigation, audit, detection, elimination, and prosecution of fraud, waste, and abuse through policy research and analysis; standardization of practices, policies, conduct, and ethics; encouragement of professional development by providing and sponsoring educational programs; and the establishment of professional qualifications, certifications, and licensing.

IG Shapiro serves on the AIG’s Government Relations Committee (and two membership sub-committees.) The Government Relations Committee provides guidance to jurisdictions considering creating an office of the inspector general. IG Shapiro testified before committees of the Boston City Council and the Rhode Island House of Representatives on proposals to create an office of the inspector general in those jurisdictions.

Prior to his appointment, IG Shapiro was the First Deputy Comptroller of the Commonwealth. He has also served in various legal, administrative, and fiscal roles in the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office. Earlier in his career, IG Shapiro was a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and on Beacon Hill in Boston.

IG Shapiro earned his Juris Doctor from Suffolk Law School and a Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University. He is a member of the Massachusetts bar and is a Certified Inspector General.
