Carrie Kimball, Communications Officer

Boston, MAThe Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has issued a letter to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) reviewing its contractual agreement with MassChallenge, Inc., a nonprofit organization that connects its sponsors with startup companies to work on innovative solutions to those sponsors’ perceived challenges. The OIG’s Internal Special Audit Unit (ISAU) initiated an investigation into the agreement after receiving an OIG hotline complaint.

The ISAU found that the MBTA did not have a clear objective in pursuing the sponsorship agreement with MassChallenge and did not appropriately oversee the contract and vendor by assigning a contract administrator. Furthermore, the ISAU found nothing to indicate that the MBTA followed through with its chosen startup to leverage the agreement’s anticipated benefits.
