Registered Apprenticeship is a proven workforce development solution, helping businesses in Massachusetts recruit and develop well-trained workers in high-demand occupations. The state’s Department of Labor Standards is leveraging Registered Apprenticeship as an effective workforce development strategy to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and recruit quality candidates, train employees to the specific agency needs, and retain and grow a highly skilled workforce within state government.

In this blog, we sit down with James, Justin, and Danielson to delve into their apprenticeship experiences, gaining insights into the knowledge they acquired, and the transformative impact the DLS Apprenticeship Program had on their career trajectories.

Why did you apply for the apprenticeship program at DLS?

James: "I applied for the apprenticeship program at DLS because I saw it was a great opportunity to start my career in state government, and after reading the job description, I felt confident I could succeed in the role due to the on-the-job training and classroom learning DLS provides apprentices."

Justin: "Prior to the apprenticeship, I had been working within DLS and knew some inspectors and others within the program. The apprenticeship sounded like a great opportunity to get out in the field and help keep public sector workers safe."

Danielson: "I applied for the apprenticeship program at DLS because I enjoy gaining practical experience, learning from industry professionals, and benefiting from networking opportunities. It was a perfect match for aligning my career goals with DLS and being part of an inclusive work culture."

What did you enjoy the most during your apprenticeship experience?

James: "I enjoyed going to several inspection sites with different inspectors throughout the program. Also, I love all the classroom learning I received because it combined on-the-job training with formal education that prepared me to be a successful inspector."

Justin: "The part I enjoyed most was shadowing other inspectors. Seeing first-hand how each inspector approaches and conducts an inspection was valuable in helping me develop my own work style."

Danielson: "I appreciated DLS's commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, and I believe that working in an environment where diversity and inclusivity are valued will not only enhance my personal growth but also contribute to a more dynamic and innovative work culture. Gaining hands-on experience and being able to work alongside experienced professionals was also enjoyable. This allowed me to learn from their expertise and gain valuable insights and industry knowledge that I wouldn't have obtained otherwise."

Why would you recommend apprenticeships as a career pathway?

James: "The apprenticeship program allows employees to develop skills relevant to their industries through hands-on, practical training. Getting training on the job can be highly beneficial for career advancement."

Justin: "Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to earn money while learning a skill from those with experience in the field. I would encourage anyone thinking of starting an apprenticeship to go for it. Learning a new skill from those in the field can be a rewarding experience you can turn into a successful career."

Danielson: "Apprenticeships offer a direct pathway to employment. By working alongside experienced professionals, you can build strong industry connections and develop a network of contacts. The combination of hands-on experience, networking opportunities, financial support, long-term employment prospects, and diverse career options make apprenticeships an excellent choice for individuals looking to enter the workforce or enhance their existing skills."
