A Memoir of Mrs. Susanna Rowson: With Elegant and Illustrative Extracts From Her Writings in Prose and Poetry

(Albany: J. Munsell, 1870)

This month, our Collection Spotlight case takes us to Federal Street in Boston in 1797, where we are highlighting materials that represent two schools found on that street: Memoir of Mrs. Susanna Rowson, published in 1870, and Regulations for the Government of the School in Federal Street, published in Boston in 1797. Following the passage of  “An Act To Provide For The Instruction Of Youth, And For The Promotion Of Good Education” in 1789, these two schools existed concurrently on the same street, one for boys and one for girls.

Visit us from September 8 through October 7 to see these materials on display and read more on our blog (link to https://mastatelibrary.blogspot.com/2025/09/back-to-school-on-federal-street.html)
