Who we serve

The District Attorney for the Cape & Islands District is responsible for all murder and electronic surveillance investigations.  We are obligated to implement changes in the criminal laws and to make recommendations for such changes in representing both the citizens of Barnstable, Nantucket and Dukes Counties as well as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The agency’s goal is to ensure the peace and safety of the community by speedy prosecution of major offenders as well as by expediting the handling of minor criminal matters.  In pursuing the reduction of criminal activity, the District Attorney for the Cape & Islands District is assisted by Massachusetts State Police detectives who are assigned to the District Attorney’s Office.  The office also works with the police departments within the jurisdiction and encourages cooperative relations among law enforcement agencies at all levels.  In pursuing our mission objectives, we continue to emphasize the investigation and prosecution of crime at all levels.

In addition to its law enforcement mandate, the District Attorney for the Cape & Islands District has established programs that address the needs of our community extending beyond the normal prosecution function.  These programs include but are not limited to:

Proactive approaches to prosecuting juvenile crime

Proactive approaches to prosecuting and managing sexual offenders and sexually dangerous persons (SDPs)

Prevention and intervention services within the community

Increased interaction with victims of crime

Truancy Prevention Program – Keep Them Coming

Juvenile and Youthful Diversion Programs

Our office also conducts trainings throughout the community.  We are frequently invited into the schools for presentations on teen violence, drug issues, school safety planning, bullying, hazing, sexual harassment, internet safety and computer crime.
