As part of its duty to prosecute crime, the Essex District Attorney's Office provides support and advocacy to crime victims and offers services and treatment to non-violent offenders under 21 and non-violent drug-dependent offenders of any age.  The Office also partners with community groups, schools and police to offer prevention and education programs.  Juvenile Justice Coordinators and Victims Witness Advocates play an important role in protecting public safety..

Juvenile Justice Coordinator

A Juvenile Justice Coordinator is responsible for all juvenile justice prevention and intervention initiatives including Juvenile and Youthful Diversion for non-violent offenders under 21; as well as Drug Diversion for substance-dependent individuals of all ages.  The Juvenile Justice Coordinator shall screen and review all cases in the district and juvenile courts to determine eligibility and assist with the appropriate placement in the Juvenile/Youthful/Drug Diversion programs; including coordinating and monitoring appropriate services such as counseling and/or community service.

Victim Witness Advocate

A Victim Witness Advocate works under the supervision of the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Victim Witness Services Division.  The Advocate provides information, support and other services to victims, witnesses and their families throughout the criminal justice process in compliance with M.G.L. c. 258B, the “Victim Bill of Rights."  The Victim Witness Advocate is an important part of the prosecution team and helps the victim and witness understand and participate in the criminal case.
