Springfield Data Center - Information Technology Division

The purpose of this project was to provide a second data center for the Commonwealth's Information Technology Division to operate as an active back-up to the Mass. Information Technology Center (MITC) in Chelsea.

The facility is at a higher level of reliability than the existing data facilities at MITC, provide a critical backup data center facility for the Commonwealth, and be a 'show case' green data center.

Project Designer: TRO Jung|Brannen
Construction Manager: Skanska USA Building Inc.
Project Type: CM at Risk
Project Cost: $110 Million (Including $18 Million ITD Consolidation/Equipment Costs)
Substantial Completion Date: February 2013

The first phase of the project provided approximately 11,500 square feet of computer area supported by extensive mechanical systems. Support and office areas occupy the remainder of the building. The shell space for a second phase of computer area development was built in this project phase.

The data center was built on the 2.2 acre site of the former Technical High School in Springfield. The project site is in an historic area and the façade of the remaining portion of the high school is in an historic district. The project preserved the Elliot St. façade of Tech High School and demolished the remaining portion of the building, replacing it with a modern facility.

Project Features

  • The Data Center is classified as TIER III, N+1. This classification requires redundancy in MEP systems to facilitate back-up and it also provides higher levels of building security than existing state facilities
  • Project Targeted Mass LEED+, but higher LEED levels and "green Data Center" were goals
  • LEED Gold Certification
  • Project location is adjacent to new Federal Court and in historic area of downtown Springfield requiring design and preservation efforts as well as security and operational goals
