Re: School Closure - Deadline for Filing Claims and Enrolling in a Teachout

The deadline for enrolling in a teach-out or filing a Claim for Restitution with the Department has been extended until November 30, 2010. This bulletin is an update on information posted in prior bulletins. Please read all prior bulletins, which are located in the closed schools section of our website.

On August 20, 2010, the Board of Registration for Massage Therapy (Board) met to discuss the status of applications from students who attended The John Winsolow Institute (JWI).

Students Who Completed Programs and Applied to DPL for Licensure:
The Board rescinded its denial of applications received from former JWI students and announced that it will review all current applications and issue determinations on each within a few weeks. If you were denied licensure and do not receive an updated response, or a license, from by the Division of Professional Licensure (DPL) by September 17, 2010, please contact Michael Hawley at 617-727-1631.

Students Who Completed Programs but Have Not Applied to DPL for Licensure:
If you completed a massage therapy program at JWI, but did not apply to DPL for a massage therapist's license, you have until November 30, 2010 to submit your application to DPL. If you submit your application before the deadline, your application will be considered under the 500-hour requirements that existed prior to May 1, 2010. However, if you apply after the deadline, you will be subject to the 650-hour requirements that went into effect on May 1, 2010.

Students Who Did Not Complete Programs:
The Board agreed that JWI students may transfer their coursework to another school licensed by the Department. Students have until November 30, 2010 to either file a Claim for Restitution with the Department or enroll in a teach-out at one of the three schools in Bulletin #3A.

While the Department is attempting to contact all students affected by the closure, if you are in contact with your classmates, please pass along the information about the extension on the deadline. Also, remind them that if they are going to participate in a teach-out, they must first provide the Department with a copy of the enrollment agreement, proof of payment, and transcript. If they don't have all three items, please encourage them to send a copy of any documentation they have to the Department. If they paid by check, please have them request from their bank a copy of the front and back of the cancelled check.

The Department greatly appreciates your help in keeping the volume of phone calls it receives to a minimum by checking these Bulletins. If you have specific questions about the teach-out or claim options, please contact us.

We thank you for your help and patience in this matter.
