Care for a family member with a serious health condition

Paid Family and Medical Leave, or PFML, is a benefit offered to Massachusetts employees by the Commonwealth.

On-screen text reads: “Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) and what it covers”

PFML allows you to manage your own serious illness...

A smiling person sits in a chair and reads a book while hooked up to an EKG machine and a saline IV. On-screen text reads "Manage your own illness"

Bond with a new child in your family…

On one side of the screen a mother cradles her newborn child, while on the other a couple gathers with their child around a snowman. On-screen text reads "Bond with a new child"

Manage affairs while a family member is on active duty…

A portrait of a family member wearing a military uniform hangs on a wall. On-screen text reads "Manage affairs while a family member is on active duty"

Or take family leave to care for a family member with a serious health condition.

An animation of a caring leave form appears as if it is being filled out on a computer.  On-screen text reads "Family leave to care for a family member with a serious health condition”

The term “family member” applies to a wide range of people. They do not need to live in Massachusetts.

The screen splits into 3 scenes: A man pushes his partner in a wheelchair and the screen reads "Spouse or domestic partner"; a mother sits on a bed with her child and the on-screen text reads "Child or Sibling"; and a woman sits on a bed with an elderly woman and the on-screen text reads "Parent, guardian, or grandparent."

You will need to have your family member’s health care provider fill out a “Certification to Care for a Family Member” form.

A portrait of a doctor appears next to a form that reads "Certification of your family member's serious health condition" as the form is slowly filled out.

You're eligible for up to 12 weeks of paid family leave and a combined 26 weeks of paid family and medical leave.

On-screen text reads:

  • Up to 12 weeks of paid family leave
  • Up to 20 weeks of paid medical leave for yourself
  • Up to 26 Weeks of paid family and medical leave combined
