Cleaner, Greener, Healthier Schools

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Public Health are working to help local school officials address environmental issues and improve regulatory compliance.

The environmental health and safety of school property can affect students, teachers, and staff. Potential hazards include asbestos in boiler rooms and building insulation; improperly stored cleaning chemicals and shop wastes; lead in wall paint, playground soil, and old water lines; mercury in discarded lab and medical equipment; and exhaust fumes from buses.
