Overview   of Salem - Jefferson Avenue over Parallel Street

A Live Virtual Public Informational Meeting will be hosted on the MassDOT website below to present the design for the proposed Jefferson Avenue over Parallel Street project in Salem, MA.

Purpose:

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Jefferson Avenue over Parallel Street project. All views and comments submitted in response to the meeting will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

The proposed project consists of replacing the existing Jefferson Avenue Bridge over Parallel Street. The existing bridge structure is in disrepair and needs to be replaced. The proposed bridge will be approximately of the same size and location as the existing bridge. The portion of Parallel St., beneath the Jefferson Ave. Bridge, will be closed during construction. The construction will be staged to minimize traffic impacts and will not include traffic detours for Jefferson Ave. An access road for the (4) properties west of the bridge on Parallel St. is proposed. The bridge replacement will involve 2-stages of construction utilizing a single, alternating traffic lane with temporary signals on Jefferson Ave. Water, gas, and overhead power/phone/cable utilities within Jefferson Ave. will be relocated/reconstructed. Approach retaining walls along Jefferson Ave. will be repaired. The proposed roadway configuration of the bridge will consist of an 11-foot wide vehicle lane in each direction with a 5-foot wide buffer and 7-foot wide bike lane on each side. Concrete sidewalks on each side of the bridge will be 5’-9”wide and crash barriers will replace the existing chain link fences at the back of the sidewalks. Pedestrian and bicycle access along Jefferson Ave. and to Parallel St. will be relocated. An option to make the temporary access road a permanent roadway to Parallel St. is proposed. The temporary, or permanent roadway configuration would create a 10-foot wide vehicle lane in each direction from Jefferson Ave., originating near the Adams Street intersection, with a 5-foot wide cement sidewalk.
