The Details   of Adopt-A-Highway

What you need   for Adopt-A-Highway

All participants are required to attend a safety training session and view a safety video prior to participation.

In order for you to volunteer you must be:

  • At least 11 years old
  • Mentally alert
  • Responsible and have good common sense
  • In good physical condition, including sight and hearing

Volunteer teams for Adopt-A-Highway consist of at least 6 members. If your team has volunteers under 18, you must have an adult supervisor for every 4 volunteers under 15 or every 6 volunteers that are 15-17.

    When you are picking up litter along the highway, there are special precautions you should take. We also limit what you can and cannot pick up and what you should wear while you are picking up litter. Read the document for more information

Each volunteer group adopts a 2 mile section of a highway and removes litter at least once a month. MassDOT will place a sign on the highway to recognize your group for their hard work. But if you are volunteering with a for-profit business, MassDOT asks that you provide the sign.
