What you need for Submit a Variance Request to the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters

The Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters ("Board") meets the first Wednesday of each month unless there is a conflict.  The meeting notice and agenda items will be posted on the Board's website at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. 

All completed applications must be received by the board two full weeks prior to a Board meeting. This includes the petition to the Local Board of Health when applicable. It is the Petitioner’s responsibility to notify the local Board of Health and Local Plumbing Inspector (State Plumbing Inspector if it is a State project). After they have been notified by letter or email, add this correspondence to your variance application. These instructions are located on the first page of the plumbing variance application. If your application is not complete at the time of submission, it will be sent back to you.  Only completed applications will be docketed and added to the Agenda.

Please submit all materials in one single PDF file and mail the non-refundable variance application fee check made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the amount of $86.00 to the address below.  Please include reference information on which variance the check is for.

Please follow the instructions on how to submit a Plumbing Board variance electronically.  If you are mailing in your variance application, make sure the application is completed and do not submit documents larger than 8 ½” x14”.

Electronic Submission of Variance Applications

  • Applications should be sent to Plumbingvariances@mass.gov. Please obtain copies of the relevant variance application from the "Plumbing and Gas Fitting Applications and Forms" webpage.
  • The email submission must have the subject line: Variance Application - <Address>, <City>
  • The application and all attachments must be in .pdf format
  • The application and all attachments must be included in a single file, except where that file would exceed 15 megabytes.
    • If the file would exceed 15 megabytes, it may be broken up into as few files as possible to fall below that size limit.
    • We cannot accept any email where the total attachment size exceeds 15 megabytes, where you need to break up your attachment to avoid that limit, please send the attachments in multiple emails with the variance request address in the subject line.

There is a non-refundable $86.00 fee. While the actual variance application may be submitted electronically via email, the payment must be submitted via first-class mail. Accordingly, please mail the non-refundable variance application to the address below:
