What you need for Verify a barber, cosmetology, or electrology license
You can only verify a license if you previously held or currently hold a license issued by the Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. If you’re a member of the public and want to see if a person or business is licensed, use the free Check A License service.
Note: We do not accept paper or mailed requests. All requests must be submitted online.

How to check Verify a barber, cosmetology, or electrology license
You must use the ePLACE Portal to submit a request online.
Create an ePLACE account (View detailed instructions for creating an account) or log in to ePLACE.
- Select "Manage Licenses, Permits, and Certificates"
- Select "File an Application"
- Select "License Verification Request/Certification"
- Select Board for your license, you’ll need:
- License Type
- Last Name
- Contact (phone or email)
- List any special instructions
- Select “Certificate of Regulatory Board Form requests”
- Upload form in the documents section, if applicable
- Pay fee ($15 for each letter requested)
- Submit form
Please allow two to three weeks for processing. The status will change to “closed” once the verification has been completed. If you have any other questions, email cosmetologyandbarberingboard@mass.gov.
