Combating Public Benefits Fraud

If you suspect that someone fraudulently receives public benefits provided by the Commonwealth such as MassHealth, state-sponsored childcare, or food and cash assistance – let the State Auditor's Bureau of Special Investigations know.

Public benefits programs, such as SNAP and MassHealth, provide a critical social safety net to many Massachusetts residents. While fraud in these programs represent only a fraction of total spending, it has a disproportionate impact in reducing public trust in these services.

The Office of State Auditor Diana DiZoglio (OSA), through its Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI), uses tips, partnerships, and proactive data analytics tools to identify those committing fraud. It investigates allegations of fraud in MassHealth, programs administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance, and the Department of Early Education and Care. When it finds evidence of fraud, BSI refers cases to state organizations and law enforcement agencies to recover funds, and when appropriate pursue criminal charges.
