Navigation Evaluation

A study of the boating along the Saugus River, in the vicinity of the General Edwards Drawbridge is currently being conducted. The purpose of the study is to determine the present and possible future channel clearances that are needed for vessels passing under the bridge.

Preliminary Design

The project is in the preliminary design phase of preparing contract plans and specifications for replacing the General Edwards Drawbridge.

Several options were investigated, that included rehabilitating the existing bridge; replacing the existing bridge superstructure; and constructing a new bridge on a roadway alignment that is just down river and parallel to the existing bridge.

This examination determined that constructing a new bridge would be less disruptive to Route 1A traffic and would provide a more durable longer lasting structure. The results of the Navigation Evaluation will determine if a fixed span bridge can be built.
