Grant Program Overview and Goals

The funding for this Environmental Justice Grant Program is part of a $1.5 billion investment in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Urban & Community Forestry is soliciting grant applications for the purpose of supporting tree planting efforts on public and private property in disadvantaged communities across the Commonwealth.

This Grant Program is designed to bring the measurable positive environmental, public health, and energy efficiency benefits of an expanded tree canopy cover to the lives of residents living and working in environmental justice communities.

One hundred percent of the work must take place within environmental justice neighborhoods and all projects must result in tree planting. The Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool and Environmental Justice Map Viewer will be the tools used to geographically identify these neighborhoods.

Eligible Applicants: Municipalities, 501(c)3 Organizations, and federally recognized Tribes.

Application Deadline: May 1 at 3:00 pm.

Minimum Award: $20,000

Maximum Award: $100,000
