What is a digital license and how do I obtain one?

A digital license is an electronic format of your license. Please read the job aid for step-by-step guidance for how to view/print an Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI) License.

How is a digital license different from a physical license?

A digital license is the new way OPSI licenses are issued. It is a secure, electronic version of your license that you can print or store on your cell phone. The Division of Occupational Licensure grants you easy access to your license on your computer or mobile device.

How can I renew or update my digital license?

The OPSI License Verification Site (mylicense.com) now contains a digital version of your license that previously was mailed to you.

Do I have to get a digital license?

The Office of Public Safety and Inspections will stop printing hard copy licenses effective August 15, 2023.

Could I still get a hard copy of my license?

Individuals may print a copy of their license from the OPSI License Verification Site (mylicense.com) and maintain that hard copy on their person.

How can I carry a copy of my license at all times?

You may carry your digital license on your electronic device (cell phone) or print a hard copy through a third-party vendor or in paper format.

If I do not have a physical copy of my license, do I still have to pay a licensing fee?

Yes, that is due to the permission granted to do business in a specific trade on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Why does DOL no longer print licenses?

It is costly and inefficient to print hard copy licenses. The digital version does not have to wait for postal service delivery, and applicants do not need to pay for duplicate licenses. 

What type of information needs to be visible in a digital license?

For verification purposes a Digital License must include the following:

  1. Digital Photo        
  2. License number               
  3. Expiration date that has not passed

What if I don’t have a smartphone, can I still get a license?

If I get a digital license, do I still have to pay for a hard copy?

No, carrying a digital license is deemed the equivalent of carrying a hard copy license.

If I get a digital license, do I still have to pay for a duplicate license?

No, digital licenses eliminate a fee for duplicate copies.

Will there be an app I have to download on my phone to get my digital license?

Will there be a renewal fee if I have a digital license?

Digital licenses can be accessed through any device, including a personal computer, laptop and tablet. In the unlike event that a phone is lost a digital license could be printed on a piece of paper.

What happens if I can’t retrieve or view my digital license on my phone?

How will I be able to print out a copy of my license, when I need to provide a copy of my license?

What if an inspector arrives at my job site and asks for my license, but my phone’s battery is dead?

Digital licenses can be accessed through any device, including a personal computer, laptop and tablet. If you have phone battery concerns, you may want to consider keeping a printed copy of your license on you to present to an inspector if needed.

How can others determine the digital license is legitimate, valid, and untampered?

Division of Occupational Licensure employees, such as inspectors, have access to digital licenses and will need to verify this information is accurate:

  1. Digital photo
  2. License number
  3. Expiration date that has not passed

Would I be able to add my license to multiple cell phones (e.g. work phone and personal cell phone)?

Digital licenses can be accessed through any device, including a personal computer, laptop, tablet and/or second phone (work phone).

How long will it take to receive a digital license, once processed and when and where to get it?

If your application is complete, it can take 2 – 3 weeks for processing.  You will receive an email once your license is active or renewed with instructions on how to access your digital license.

What security measures are in place to prevent fraudulent use?

The OPSI license verification site MyLicenseOne is a secure Commonwealth portal. Individuals need a username and password to display personal license information. This username and password should be kept confidential at all times and not shared with anyone to keep your personal information secure.
