Description
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader who will serve as the Medical Director (Chief of Service) of the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences (BIDLS). He/she will provide clinical leadership to BIDLS, epidemiologic input to the State Epidemiologist, and consultation to other DPH departments, local health departments, and governmental agencies. The Medical Director provides clinical supervision and medical guidance in disease recognition, investigation and control, as well as interpretation and application of policies and procedures. The incumbent serves as an educational resource for professional and lay audiences while formulating disease prevention policies with intra-departmental and inter-departmental working groups and professional organizations.
The Medical Director contributes to the success of BIDLS by integrating performance improvement initiatives together with regulatory requirements, while supporting all goals and objectives. Modern management, planning, administrative skills and experience, including the ability to be flexible and available when needed, are a hallmark of this role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment methods used in the field of medicine relative to the care of the physically ill as well as pharmacology/utilization of pharmaceutical and biological agents for the prevention or treatment of infection
- Capacity to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing program requirements
- Proficient in medical research methods and techniques with the ability to diagnose, classify and treat physical disease and injuries
- General understanding of the factors, trends and problems in providing medical care services and emergency services under extreme circumstances
- Critical thinking skills, using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
- Ability to interpret documents such as patient profiles, medication orders, medical records, and X-rays and other diagnostic reports
- Demonstrated ability to supervise staff including performance appraisal, employee coaching/training/development, and performance management
- Skilled in planning and conducting training/instruction in medical related matters to physicians
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders and communicate complex information to various audiences
- Strong written and oral communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Minimum Entrance Requirements
Applicants must have at least five years of full-time or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a registered physician three years of which must have been in a specialized field such as pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, endocrinology, neurology or infectious disease. Special Requirements: Current and valid registration as a physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine. Must also be certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in area of specialization
Please note: The incumbent of this position will function as “Chief of Service” and as such is excluded from Bargaining Unit 7 under the MNA collective bargaining agreement. Therefore most benefits are governed by the Commonwealth's "Red Book". (For example: your dental/vision benefits will be with the Group Insurance Commission)

Salary is commensurate with experience. Range is $160,828.20 - $261,827.02
