Mental Health Resource Guide for LGBTQ2IA+ Young People and Their Trusted Adults

The Attorney General’s Office was awarded $1 million by the U.S. DOJ for the STOP School Violence and Mental Health Grant Program on October 1, 2018. In addition to collaborating with Sandy Hook Promise to implement and expand violence and suicide prevention training programs in participating middle and high schools across the state, the AGO created this mental health resource guide.

Overview of the Resource Guide

The goal of the “Mental Health and Gender-Affirming Care Resource Guide for Massachusetts LGBTQ2IA+ Young People and Their Trusted Adults" is to centralize and organize existing mental health care resources that specialize in LGBTQ2IA+ care in order to increase accessibility to services and information.  The intended audiences of the Resource Guide are: 1) LGBTQ2IA+ young people and 2) their trusted adults and community members.  The Guide also seeks to acknowledge the important roles that intersectionality and social determinants of health play in mental health outcomes.

The first part of the Resource Guide focuses on mental health providers that specialize in care for LGBTQ2IA+ youth.  The Guide begins with mental health resources available across the state, followed by county-specific resources.  The organizations included in these sections provide services supportive to LGBTQ2IA+ populations and many self-identify as free or low-cost.

The next section of the Resource Guide contains mental health provider directories, which allows young people to find individual therapists using filters relevant to their needs.  In addition, because gender expression is a critical component of mental health for transgender youth, the subsequent section contains a directory of gender-affirming care providers.  The “Social Connection” section provides a list of communities that offer acceptance to LGBTQ2IA+ youth and promote positive and inclusive youth development.

The Resource Guide also provides general information and tips about how to find a mental health care provider, answers to common questions and concerns, and educational resources to learn more about mental health topics or LGBTQ2IA+ identities.  The Guide ends with an index, which allows readers to search for organizations which meet their needs based on identities or populations, languages spoken, or specific topics or issues of interest.
