MNA Unit 7 Training Opportunities
In-person, onsite training at Taunton State Hospital, Ricky Silvia Gym
On May 29, MNA will host in-person training at the Ricky Silvia Gym, Taunton State Hospital. This training offers the opportunity to receive 3.0 Contact hours for the "Failure-Free Activities: Packing a Lunchbox Filled with Endless Possibilities" training, and 2.5 Contact hours for the "Substance Use Disease: The Danger of Illicit Drug Use" training. Contact hour value is utilized by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. You must register for one or both sessions. Target Audience for both sessions are Nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Timetable:
- 8:30am - 9am: Registration
- 9am - 12:15pm: Failure-Free Activities: Packing a Lunchbox Filled with Endless Possibilities.
- 12:15pm - 1pm: Afternoon Registration, along with a complimentary lunch will be provided. Please alert MNA staff present if you have any food allergies or if you require a gluten-free option.
- 1pm - 3:30pm: Substance Use Disease: The Danger of Illicit Drug Use.
Failure-Free Activities: Packing a Lunchbox Filled with Endless Possibilities
Course description: Presented by: Judith Pare, PhD, RN. This program will provide the learner with strategies to meet the needs of caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease away from home. Program participants will engage in an activity to create a “lunchbox” of failure-free activities for the person in the early, middle, and later stages of the disease. These activities will be designed to be used while waiting in medical offices, Emergency Departments, and other settings that may be unfamiliar and confusing for the individual.
Substance Use Disease: The Danger of Illicit Drug Use
Course Description: Presented by: Charlene Verga, MSN, RN, CEN, LNC. This program will provide an overview of substance use disease and the danger of illicit drug use. Different drug substances and the effects and treatment modalities will be analyzed along with the increase in overdose deaths during the pandemic. Learn how to identify risk factors of addiction, routes of mechanism utilized for drug use, list the common illicit drugs used by patients with substance use disease. Describe the nursing considerations when caring for a patient under the influence of the common drugs used.

Management of Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) Exposures
Description: Nurses, first responders, and other healthcare workers are at risk of contracting bloodborne diseases. The three most common bloodborne pathogens workers are exposed to during their daily activities while caring for patients are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). This program will discuss the currently known best practices to effectively care for oneself and others following a bloodborne pathogen(s) exposure.
Presented by: Ann Zaia, PhD, CNP, ScM, MSN, MHA, CHE, COHN-S, FAAOHN
Learning Outcomes:
- List BBP’s post-exposure lab tests, scheduling and timeline.
- Discuss information that should be included in post-exposure counseling.
- Describe PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxes) medications used for exposures to an HIV positive source patient.
Target Audience: Nurses and other healthcare professionals
To successfully complete a program and receive Contact Hours, you must:

The deadline to register is June 3, 2024
MNA will provide 2.00 Contact Hours for the program based on the contact hour value utilized by ANCC and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
