Dashboard Instructions
How the display works:
- Dashboard displays Massachusetts businesses only in the map format; out of state businesses are still searchable but not within the confines of the map.
- Areas showing darker colors have a higher number of certified businesses.
- Areas with a duller/paler color have fewer certified businesses.
- Under the map, your search results are displayed showing the company name, city, county, and contact information.
- Click on a business underneath the map to see its certification type displayed on the right of the map.
Using a screen reader with Power BI reports:
This dashboard was developed using Power BI software. When viewing a Power BI dashboard using a screen reader, you are advised to leave scan mode off or turn off the virtual cursor.
Use the tab key to place focus on the report (IFrame). Press Control + Enter to begin interacting with the report.
Use the Tab key to navigate to each object on the page, such as slicers, shape map, business count cards, clustered bar charts, and a business detail group.
- To view an accessible version of the Show data window for the current object in focus, press Alt + Shift + F11. This window displays the data used in the visual as an HTML table.
- When using Show data via keyboard shortcuts, turn on scan mode or the virtual cursor to access all the available hotkeys provided by your screen reader.
Slicers/Search filters:
MA-State and Other State: Allows you to search by All, Massachusetts only or out-of-state businesses.
List of Counties: Allows you to search for businesses in a certain county (this search will be interdependent to city and ZIP codes). To search for businesses in other states, select “out-of-state” from this dropdown menu.
City: Allows you to search by city or town (this search will be interdependent to ZIP codes).
Certification Type: Allows you to search for businesses of a specific certification type.
Search by Business Name: Allows you to search for a particular business by that business’ name.
Screen readers/keyboard interaction:
To interact with a drop-down filter in a slicer, navigate to the desired slicer using the Tab key and hit Enter. Use the Tab key to toggle between the filter drop-down list and its corresponding clear button. Hit Enter on the filter drop down list to display the available values, and use the up and down arrow keys to read them. Press the Space bar to make your desired selections. To select multiple items hold down the control key and arrow through the list. Tap the spacebar to make your selections. Hit Escape twice, once to close out the filter and a second time to place focus back on the slicer.
To hear data in the shape map, place focus on the shape map using the Tab key, and hit Enter to place focus on the plot area list. Hit Enter again to open up the plot area list, and use your arrow keys to hear the available data. When finished, hit Escape twice to place focus back on the shape map.
Information seen to the right of the map:
DBE business count: The number of federal certifications are displayed based on the search results.
State business count: The number of state certifications are displayed based on the search results.
Screen readers/keyboard interaction:
To hear available data broken down by federal and state certifications in the business count cards, place focus on the business count card and hit Enter. When finished, hit Escape to place focus back on the business count card.
Clustered Bar charts:
Count by certification type: Search results are shown by certification type.
Count by profit and non-profit: Search results are shown by profit/non-profit status.
Count by business nature type: Search results are shown by general industry types of businesses found
Screen readers/Keyboard interaction:
To filter data in the clustered bar charts based on certificate type, profit, and business nature, place focus on a clustered bar chart and hit Enter. Use the Tab key to place focus on the plot area list, and hit Enter to display the available options. Use your arrow keys to hear the available options. Hold the Control key + Space bar to make your desired selections. Once finished, hit Escape twice to place focus back on the clustered bar chart.
Under the map/detail group:
Your search results are displayed showing the company name, city, county, and contact information.
Click on a business underneath the map to see its certification type displayed on the right of the map.
Screen readers/Keyboard interaction:
The detail group displays data based on your filtered results. To read information contained within the table in the Detail group, place focus on the detail group area and hit Enter. Use your arrow keys to read the information, and hit Escape when done.
