Traffic and construction updates - Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacements

Project status and construction and traffic management updates

Table of Contents

Construction activities are in progress. Weather and unexpected circumstances make all construction activities subject to change without notice, but we will do our best to keep you updated.

Overview

To accommodate the first phase of construction on the Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacements Project, the project team will be implementing shifts to traffic and travel lanes on both the Maffa Way bridge and the Mystic Avenue bridge beginning on April 29, 2024.

On the Maffa Way bridge, vehicular travel will be reduced to two lanes, one from Broadway and one from the I-93 Southbound off-ramp, and the north side of the bridge will be closed for construction. This condition will ensure the safety both of commuters and members of the project team during construction activities. As this work is taking place, both the pedestrian sidewalk and on-road bicycle lane will be maintained.

On the Mystic Avenue bridge, vehicular travel will be reduced to two lanes and the south side of the bridge will be closed for construction. This condition will ensure the safety both of commuters and members of the project team during construction activities. As this work is taking place, the pedestrian sidewalk will be maintained.

Additionally, to accommodate the first phase of construction on the Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacements Project, a temporary traffic reconfiguration is in place on Broadway between Mt. Pleasant Street and Caldwell Street and on the I-93 Southbound off-ramp in Boston. This work began on April 1, 2024.

Traffic has been shifted to provide a safe workspace while crews modify the raised median between Broadway and the I-93 Southbound off-ramp, a necessary component for the first phase of bridge reconstruction.

What you can expect

Abutters, motorists, cyclists, and walking pedestrians should expect to see more construction activities in the area and should consider adding additional time for their commutes. In addition to the reduction of vehicular travel lanes on the Maffa Way bridge and the Mystic Avenue bridge, slight shifts of travel lanes on Broadway between Mt. Pleasant Street and Caldwell Street and on the I-93 Southbound off-ramp remain in place to accommodate construction activity.

There are no proposed detours during this phase of construction.

During these activities, crews will be working during standard construction hours, 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM Monday – Friday, except during certain periods coinciding with the temporary shutdown of MBTA train and rail services in the area.
