Boston — State Auditor Suzanne M. Bump released the following statement on the announcement by Governor Charlie Baker yesterday to make a multi-million investment at the Chelsea Soldiers' Home to fund capital improvements.

“Last year, an audit from my office found significant and long-standing health and safety concerns for the residents of the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea. At that time, I called for state leaders to develop a plan for both immediate and long-term improvements to the facility. I commend Governor Baker, Speaker DeLeo, members of the legislature, and the Board of the Soldiers’ Home for taking this important first step toward providing residents of this facility a safe and sanitary place to call home. The needs of this facility are substantial, so I encourage them to continue their efforts to see this investment through to completion to ensure the conditions we found do not return.”
