Media Contact for Auditor DiZoglio’s Bureau of Special Investigations Identifies Over $2 Million in Public Benefit Fraud in Q3 of FY24

Boston — Today, State Auditor Diana DiZoglio released the Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) quarter three report. The report summarizes BSI’s work and initiatives to help make government work better by investigating, fraud, abuse, and illegal acts involving public assistance benefits throughout the Commonwealth.
For quarter three, BSI investigated 1,250 cases. Of these, 241 identified fraud totaling $2,039,888.64. Further details regarding these 241 cases may be found below.
Summary of Investigations Completed with Fraud Identified
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) $1,646,267.00
- Medicaid $214,610.77
- Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC) $100,973.73
- Department of Early Education & Care (EEC) $56,369.61
- Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Disabled, and Children (EAEDC) $14,805.43
- Personal Care Attendant (PCA)[1] $6,862.10
Grand Total $2,039,888.64
“Our BSI examiners are making government work better by identifying fraud, waste, and abuse of tax dollars so that residents actually in need have access to support and services,” said Auditor DiZoglio.
[1] PCA identifies MassHealth overpayments for PCA services; overpayments for member healthcare benefits are identified by Medicaid.
