“The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Woburn Police conducted an exhaustive investigation which uncovered an alleged tax fraud scheme among other charges against Ikponmwosa Ogiugo.

The newspaper deliveryman is accused of stealing the identity of his customers to forge checks and file at least 54 false electronic tax returns which our system’s fraud filters flagged for manual review. Fortunately, none of his alleged victims lost any tax refund due them.

Every filing season, DOR devises new ways to stop identity theft and works with law enforcement to help catch these tax thieves. Our prevention methods stopped $20 million in false refunds from going out the door last year.”
