(Boston, MA) - Massachusetts Revenue Commissioner Amy Pitter today announced that entities taxed as corporations which want to be listed in the “Corporations Book” must annually certify as to their federal and state income tax status as corporations. Every April, the agency’s Division of Local Services publishes the listing to assist Massachusetts cities and towns in determining the tax status of businesses located within their communities and which are subject to property tax benefits. DOR is introducing the new process In order to update the list and ensure it is complete and accurate.
“DOR is essentially creating a new process for ensuring entities are listed in the Corporations Book because with recent changes in the entity tax classification rules, we weren’t getting the information we needed to make accurate decisions about which businesses belonged in the book,” said Commissioner Pitter. “This will reduce the potential for errors which can adversely impact both taxpayers and cities and towns.”
The electronic certification must be filed through the DOR’s Web File for Business between now and April 1st to ensure that qualifying entities appear on the DLS List of Corporations for 2013. Take a demonstration of the application.
