BostonEssex Superior Court Chief Probation Officer Roland Buoncuore was recently honored with the 2019 Jim Minton Excellence Award by the Massachusetts Chief Probation Officers’ Association (CPOA) at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center on November 7.

As the Chief Probation Officer at Essex Superior Court, Buoncuore oversees probation operations at the Lynn, Lawrence, and Salem offices.

The Jim Minton Award was established in the memory of the Brookline District Court Chief Probation Officer and long-time member of the CPOA. The Award is presented each year by the Association to a Chief Probation Officer “whose leadership, dedication, professionalism, and contributions to the Massachusetts Probation Service are exemplary,” according to CPOA President and South Berkshire District Chief Probation Officer Alfred “Alf” Barbalunga.

Norfolk Juvenile Chief Probation Officer and Chief’s Association Treasurer Mark Prisco said of Buoncuore, “Rollie has always been a leader in the Probation Service.  He was elected president of the ACPO Association and when he became a chief, he didn’t hesitate in becoming active serving on the Executive and Professional Development committees. Rollie has led Waltham District Court, he has provided coverage at Newton District Court during a lengthy Chief’s vacancy, and currently is at the helm at Essex Superior Court. He is always willing to monitor new chiefs, support them, and always with a smile. Rollie is a shining star in our organization.”

Buoncuore said of his award, “It was very humbling to be presented with the Jim Minton Excellent Award. Since 2006-- there have been counting myself-- 14 honorees. I have had the pleasure of knowing them all, and to be held in the same regard as them as well as Chief Minton is an honor. To have been selected by the Award Selection Committee, made up of my colleagues many of them very deserving of this award, makes it very special as well.”

He began his probation career as an Essex Superior Court Probation Officer in June 1987. Buoncuore was promoted to the position of Lawrence District Assistant Chief Probation Officer in 1999. In October 2006, he was named acting Waltham District Court Chief.  He assumed a permanent position as chief at the court in 2018.

Buoncuore earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College in Paxton.  He currently serves as the CPOA Executive Committee member. Buoncuore is also a long-time member of the group’s Professional Development Committee.
