About the Massachusetts Court System
The Massachusetts court system consists of the Supreme Judicial Court, the Appeals Court, the Executive Office of the Trial Court, the 7 Trial Court departments, the Massachusetts Probation Service, and the Office of Jury Commissioner. The court system resembles a pyramid. Cases commence in one of the 7 trial court departments, and are first decided there. Cases are initiated in the particular court which has subject matter and geographic jurisdiction over the issues and parties involved.
