Jamaica Plain, MA — Secretary Jon Santiago of the Executive Office of Veterans’ Services and the VA Boston Healthcare System hosted a panel discussion addressing benefits, healthcare, and services for LGBTQ+ veterans. The event was attended by 50+ veteran community members and sought to amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ veterans and shed light on their experiences within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
"We're delighted to have organized this critical discussion," expressed Secretary Jon Santiago. "By actively listening and learning from our LGBTQ+ veterans, we can dismantle barriers and ensure they receive the care and support they deserve. While progress has been made toward LGBTQ+ equality, there is still work to be done. The Executive Office of Veterans’ Services is committed to partnering with the VA and advocating for positive change."
“VA Boston was proud to host this important panel and highlight our efforts to ensure that LGBTQ+ Veterans have access to the benefits and services they have earned in service to our nation,” said Vincent Ng, VA Boston Healthcare System Director.
Esteemed panelists, including Dr. Claire Burgess and Dr. Christine Serpe, LGBTQ+ Veterans Care Coordinators, along with Sarah Classy, Assistant Director at VA Boston Regional Benefits Office, and Dr. Marika Solhan, Director of Boston Vet Center, shared insights to guide improvements in benefits inclusivity, healthcare access, and support services for LGBTQ+ veterans.
The panel discussion focused on addressing health disparities within the community, ongoing policies, affirming care within the VHA system, and enhancing inclusivity. It aimed to strengthen resources to effectively meet the needs of LGBTQ+ veterans within the VA system. The event provided a platform for open dialogue and collaboration, fostering a greater understanding of progress and the ongoing efforts to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ veterans.
The Executive Office of Veterans’ Services and VA Boston Healthcare System are committed to the ongoing work of improving the health and care of the LGBTQ+ veteran community.
