- Massachusetts Department of Revenue
Sometimes we’re just not ready for Tax Day. If you weren’t ready to file by the April 18 deadline, you qualified for an automatic extension if you paid at least 80% of your tax liability by April 18.
Reminder: It’s an extension of time to file, not to pay. Interest will be charged on any amount due with a return, even if you have a valid extension.
With an extension, returns must be filed on or before October 16, 2023.
How to file your personal income tax return extension
When you’re ready to file, we encourage you to e-file for a fast and easy process. Individual taxpayers making an extension payment of $5,000 or more must make the payment electronically with MassTaxConnect or commercial software.
