Former Foxboro carpenter owes $49,226 in child support payments for two children ages 18 and 22

Department of Revenue Commissioner Navjeet K. Bal announced today that New York City Police Department detectives in the Briarwood section of Queens, New York, this morning took into custody Joel Edward Cornish, a former resident of Foxboro who owes $49,226 in back child support for his two children ages 18 and 22.

Cornish is one of the Top Ten Most Wanted for Failure to Pay Child Support, having appeared on the poster released in February 2009. He is the fifth person on the list to be apprehended. The others are Christopher John Lagos, Eric Alphe Grenier, Terry Lee Azevedo and Gilbert Allen Smith. All of the non-custodial parents on the Ten Most Wanted poster have had arrest warrants issued for non-support and their names entered on the National Criminal Information Center database.

(Terry Lee Azevedo is scheduled to appear in Fitchburg District Court tomorrow on his charge of non-support. The former Shirley resident owes $69,122 in back child support for his 10-year old daughter.)

Cornish, 53, was thought to be living in New York. He was arrested after a call on his whereabouts was received by the Department of Revenue's Child Support Enforcement Customer Service Center. Child Support Enforcement also maintains the Ten Most Wanted Tip-line, 1-888-WANTEDS.

Cornish faces a criminal non payment of child support charge under M.G.L. c. 273, s.1. Each parent on the Ten Most Wanted list has left the Commonwealth, and, if convicted, faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $10,000.

Cornish and the children's custodial parent were divorced in 2000 after 15 years of marriage. Suffolk Probate and Family Court ordered him to pay $366 a week in child support.
