Kristen Hurst

Springfield, MAHampden Juvenile Probation Officer II Kristen Hurst was recently honored with the “Making a Difference” Award by the American Society for Industrial Security International (ASIS) for her work as chairperson of the Eastern Hampden County Community Justice Meetings. Hurst, who has led the meetings for 13 years, was presented with the award on October 17 at the Sheraton Hotel in Springfield. This is the first time the organization has recognized a Probation employee.

The Community Justice membership includes local and state police; Juvenile, District, and Superior Court Probation; the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office; Department of Youth Services; Department of Children and Families; federal and state parole; and community providers who all share information community trends and criminal activities that impacts western Massachusetts neighborhoods. Hurst was nominated for the award by her colleague Probation Officer Kathleen Duquette.

ASIS International — based in Alexandria, Virginia — describes itself on its website as a global community for security practitioners who have a role in the protection of assets, people, property, and information.

"I'm honored to be recognized for my role in making a difference within my professional capacity as a Probation Officer and member of the law enforcement community.  While I may have started my career with a global idea of how I could and would change the world, my experience (and age) has taught me that some of the biggest impacts are made with the most basic actions," said Hurst, a 21-year Probation employee.

She added, "I so appreciate the relationships both personal and professional that have evolved from our Community Justice meetings and working in this field.”

Hampden Juvenile Chief Probation Officer Danny Baez said of Hurst, “Kristen has tremendous work ethic and has earned the respect of her colleagues. Throughout her tenure as a Probation Officer in Hampden County Juvenile Court since 1997, she has shown a lot of leadership and has gained the respect of the law enforcement community which led to her taking over the Eastern Hampden County Community Justice meeting in 2005. Her responsibilities are to bring together law enforcement agencies, state and federal agencies as well as service providers to gather and share information in order to provide services to our client and to preserve public safety.”

“Her efforts to maintain this forum for 13 years shows her unbridled commitment to not only her job as Probation Officer, but to the entire community she serves,” said Hampden Juvenile Assistant Chief Keith Gibbings. “The staff at the Hampden County Juvenile Court Probation Department congratulates Kristen and are very proud to be able to call her a colleague.”
