Boston — Holyoke District Court Probation Officer II Joseph M. McGiverin was recognized by the Holyoke Rotary Club with the William G. Dwight Distinguished Service Award which is presented to an individual whose work and dedication to the City of Holyoke“ exemplifies the spirit of the award namesake,” according to the club’s officers. As the publisher of the Holyoke Transcript-Telegram newspaper for four decades, Dwight was noted for his commitment to the City of Holyoke and its residents.
"Joe is somebody who has lived all his life in Holyoke and he cares very deeply not only about his work in the community but his work with probationers. He is interested in improving the quality of life for those in the court community and as a city official, in Holyoke," said Holyoke District Court Chief Probation Officer Sean McBride.
McGiverin was presented with the award on Thursday, November 21, during a special reception at the Delaney House. He said of his award, “I never have liked talking about myself. However, the award is special to me and it is an honor to receive it. The award represents the family values and what it means to live in Holyoke. It is a small city but it is like a small town.”
The award—which honors a public or community leader who embodies the Dwight Family’s ideals-- was first presented in 1940 by the former Holyoke Transcript-Telegram Newspaper. McGiverin has worked as a Holyoke District Court Probation Officer since 2001. He has also served as a member of the Holyoke City Council since 1980.
