Saving Employers Millions in Workplace Injury Costs

The Massachusetts On-Site Safety Consultation Program is making a big impact! According to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) estimates, the program has helped employers across the state avoid over $18.5 million in workplace injury costs. These savings come from reducing expenses like medical bills, workers' compensation premiums, and the hidden costs of workplace injuries—such as hiring and training replacements, managing admin tasks, and dealing with lost productivity.

Between fiscal years 2012 and 2022, OSHA reported that the Massachusetts On-Site Safety Consultation Program made a significant impact on workplace safety across the state. During that time, the program conducted 3,372 initial visits, identified over 29,000 serious hazards, and served an average of 13,068 workers annually. Most notably, it has helped prevent an average of 111 workplace injuries each year.

While funded primarily by OSHA, the program is administered by the Department of Labor Standards (DLS) and provides no-cost, confidential consultation services for small and medium-sized employers in both the public and private sectors. Participation is completely voluntary, with all consultations initiated by employer request.

Here’s how it works: after an employer requests a consultation, a consultant visits the worksite to evaluate potential hazards, work practices, and the employer’s safety program. At the end of the visit, the consultant provides recommendations to address hazards and improve overall safety measures.

Nationwide, OSHA reports that an average of 22,970 private sector employers benefit from these services each year.
