On April 27, 2018, the Office of Attorney General Maura Healey announced the indictment of a Smithfield, R.I. man. The charge was in connection with an alleged multi-million dollar tax evasion scheme through the sale of untaxed tobacco products in Massachusetts.

Investigators allege that the scheme resulted in more than $13 million in unreported taxes. Over the past several years, DOR has worked with other state agencies on the Illegal Tobacco Task Force to effect tax compliance. The task force was created to help ensure that much needed state revenue is distributed to Massachusetts cities and towns.
