BostonLawrence District Court Probation Officer Lidia Maldonado has been selected by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women as one of the Commonwealth’s Unsung Heroines of 2018.

Maldonado, a four-year probation officer, is among an esteemed group of women from across the Commonwealth who will be celebrated at the 2018 Unsung Heroines Ceremony which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 20, at the Massachusetts State House.

According to the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women, “Annual Unsung Heroine honors are presented to incredible women who are selected for their contributions to their communities and the Commonwealth.”

“Unsung Heroines are women who don’t always make the news, but truly make a difference in their communities, businesses, or volunteer endeavors,” the Commission stated in the award letter, “You have been selected because you are a woman who, without fanfare or recognition, uses your time, talent, spirit and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others.”

Maldonado said of being selected, “As a woman who was raised in Lawrence and who went on to pursue her dreams and goals, this would not have been possible had it not been for the support of countless individuals who have stood by me along the way. I have become a positive role model because I was fortunate enough to find many role models who took the time to guide and support me. These same individuals helped me spread my wings and fly to new distances, new horizons, new dreams that became reality.”

She added, “I strive to help those who cannot advocate for themselves, inspire young minds to not give up despite the obstacles they may face, help protect those who cannot protect themselves and create hope where darkness seems to prevail.”

Lawrence District Chief Kevin Henebury had this to say about Maldonado, her work and contributions to the Lawrence community, “It has been a pleasure working with Probation Officer Maldonado. Lidia takes great pride in her community and is active in a number of organizations. She participates in events at Lawrence High School, the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence and is also an advocate for women who are victims of domestic violence. Lidia is energetic and uses that energy in a way to make positive changes in the Lawrence Community.”

“Lidia Maldonado exemplifies what is the very best about the Probation Service - active commitment to the mission and active commitment to the community.  Lidia truly fits the description of the Unsung Heroine Award in not making the news but always making an impact,” said Commissioner Edward J. Dolan.

Lawrence District Court is one of 62 District Courts across the state. District Court probation officers supervise the most serious felony cases as well as partner with local law enforcement and treatment agencies to enhance community safety, ensure compliance with court orders, and encourage lasting change in probationers.
