Worcester — Today, the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) proudly announces the graduation of 34 recruits from the 336th Recruit Training Academy. Throughout the intensive 12-week program, these graduates developed the skills and knowledge required to serve as Correction Officers and Recreation Officers across the DOC’s facilities statewide.

“As the DOC continues to be a leader nationwide in implementing innovative programs and reducing recidivism, we also must train future leaders who will eventually take those reins and further our successes,” said DOC Commissioner Shawn Jenkins. “Our Training Academy equipped these graduates with the skills and knowledge to advance the mission of the DOC and strengthen the future of our agency.”

“Through hard work, training, and tenacity, our graduates reached this important milestone where they can take their oath and confirm their commitment to public service,” said Janice Perez, Director of Staff Development and Diversity & Equal Employment Opportunity. “We look forward to watching their careers grow.”

The graduation ceremony was held on December 13, 2024, at Worcester State University. The recruits took their oath, received their badges, and were addressed by Massachusetts Probation Service Commissioner Pamerson Ifill.

The 31 newly graduated Correction Officers’ roles will include patrolling facilities, monitoring the housed population, supervising visitation, conducting contraband searches, and educating individuals about rehabilitative and educational opportunities. The 3 new Recreation Officers will coordinate athletic and recreational activities, maintain equipment, and oversee the safe operation of recreational facilities.

The 12-week academy curriculum provides recruits with advanced training in security protocols, defensive tactics, effective communication, proper inspections, and de-escalation strategies. Recruits also had the opportunity to tour DOC facilities to gain a firsthand understanding of their future work environments. Additionally, the academy program introduced recruits to health and wellness resources, including the department’s Struggle Well program, to promote resilience and support their well-being throughout their careers.

The DOC is actively recruiting motivated individuals to join its dedicated team. The DOC offers competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, ongoing professional development, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Individuals interested in pursuing a rewarding career in corrections are encouraged to call 1-866-WRK-4DOC, email DOC-Recrutiment@mass.gov, or visit the Department's website for more information on career opportunities and upcoming academy classes.
