A group of seven Suffolk Juvenile Probation employees cooked and served dinner to 100 residents and patrons of Rosie's Place recently. Rosie's Place is a homeless shelter for women in Boston.

Assistant Chief Probation Officer (ACPO) Sharon Hasrouni, ACPO Charlene Mook, Probation Officer (PO) Mabel Skelton, PO Robert Nagle, PO Beth Davis, PO Lisa Butler and APO Victoria Cobb participated in this volunteer effort which they plan to make an annual event. The group raised $350 among themselves to donate to the shelter.

“It is the first time that we have volunteered at Rosie's as a department and all have expressed a desire to do it again,” said Hasrouni.

“We worked extraordinarily hard prepping, chopping, cooking soup, pasta with Bolognaise, salad with balsamic vinaigrette, zucchini and vanilla pudding. We cooked, served, washed dishes and cleaned up all in a matter of about 4 1/2 hours. The Probation staff had a really fun time and happily labored on behalf of very appreciative women and children. The food was delicious I might add!,” said Mook.

When Rosie’s Place opened its doors in 1974, it was run entirely by volunteers. Today, volunteers contribute nearly 60,000 hours annually, the equivalent of 29 full-time employees, according to the organization’s website.
