Revenue Commissioner Alan LeBovidge today announced that businesses in flood-damaged areas of the state would get an extra month to file certain taxes that are due now.
"Those withholding and trustees taxes that businesses normally pay by the 20 th of the month can be put off until June 20 th," LeBovidge said. "These businesses were heavily damaged by the recent floods and might have difficulty accessing their records."
LeBovidge stressed that businesses will qualify for the extension only if they are located in communities that were included in the request for national disaster status submitted by Governor Mitt Romney. The counties of Essex, Middlesex and Suffolk were listed by Romney and include communities such as Methuen, North Andover, Andover, Lawrence, Lowell, Haverhill, Peabody, Revere and Winthrop.
Generally income tax withheld from employees' pay, sales tax, meals tax and room occupancy tax are due on the 20 th of each month. The extension, granted by the commissioner, would allow businesses to pay two months' worth of taxes on June 20 th without any interest or penalty.
