On January 1st, 2021, the Governor signed Chapter 260 of the Acts of 2020, an “Act promoting a resilient health care system that puts patients first". Among other key provisions, the legislation takes steps to protect consumers from surprise bills, including a provision that directs the Secretary of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, in consultation with the Health Policy Commission, Center for Health Information and Analytics, and the Division of Insurance to develop a report and make recommendations on establishing a default rate for out of network billing by September of 2021.
