Research and Technology Transfer

Research activities address innovation and knowledge needs in many areas related to transportation. These areas include policy, management, safety, environment, planning, engineering, construction and operations.

MassDOT’s Transportation Research and Technology Transfer Section (Research Section) is located in the Office of Transportation Planning (OTP) and oversees MassDOT’s transportation research program. It organizes and conducts research in the areas of policy, management, safety, environment, planning, engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance by contracting with state universities and other research services providers. The Research Section also participates in pooled fund studies with other state transportation agencies and contributes to national and regional studies on transportation issues of interest and benefit to the Commonwealth. Finally, the Research Section promotes quality technical training through the Massachusetts Technical Assistance Program (MTAP) and Baystate Roads, the Commonwealth’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). Through these activities, MassDOT’s transportation research program contributes to improving the safety, reliability, capacity and efficiency of Massachusetts’ transportation system.
