You may return clean, empty containers to retailers that sell them, or to redemption centers. State law (the "Bottle Bill") requires retailers to redeem containers at full deposit value. It allows redemption centers to deduct processing fees from refunds.
Find nearby redemption centers by zooming in on the map below and clicking on icons near you for locations and phone numbers. Because redemption center hours and policies can vary widely, MassDEP recommends that you call ahead.
Register a New Redemption Center
If you wish to establish a redemption center, you must:
- Notify MassDEP in advance and
- Provide the agency with updated information twice a year.
You also need to notify consumers that it is against the law for them redeem containers purchased in other states for deposit refunds in Massachusetts.
